About Shenmo Rwanda

🎓

Who We Are

Shenmo Education Rwanda is the first African branch of Shenmo Education International, founded in Beijing in 1998. Founded and led in Rwanda by Jean-Pierre Muhoza (Peter / Li Zichen), we teach Abacus Mental Math to children in Kigali and partner schools—building focus, confidence, and a love of learning through joyful, hands-on practice. The Abacus Tool

The abacus is a hands-on calculating instrument made of rods and beads. Using a dual-hand system, children move beads while reading numbers—building number sense, coordination, and a clear picture of how addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division work. In 2013, abacus culture was recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage.

💡

Abacus Mental Math

Children first learn on a physical abacus, then learn to visualize the beads in their minds and calculate without the tool—faster, more accurately, and with stronger focus. This brain training strengthens memory, concentration, and problem-solving for school and life.

2

Guided training

Build speed, focus, and accuracy through fun, energetic lessons and drills.

3

Mental visualization

Picture the abacus in the mind and perform Abacus Mental Math independently.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age is the program for?

Shenmo Rwanda welcomes children aged 4–13—a prime window for cognitive growth and joyful learning habits in the primary years.

What is the difference between the abacus and Abacus Mental Math?

The abacus is the physical bead tool students learn with first. Abacus Mental Math is when a child can picture that abacus in their mind and calculate without touching the beads—the skill our program aims to develop.

Where can my child learn—at school or at the Training Center?

Both. Many children learn through partner schools; others join weekend or holiday classes at the Shenmo Training Center in Kigali. Tell us your schedule and we will help you choose the best path.

Where can I find Abacus courses?

For self-study, start with our Level 1 video course—a playlist of 9 initial Level 1 videos that introduce Abacus Mental Math step by step: Open the Level 1 playlist on YouTube. For live teaching and progression through all six levels, join the Shenmo Training Center or a partner school program.

How long does it take, and are there levels?

Progress depends on practice and attendance. Students advance through six progressive levels, with certificates recognizing achievement as they move forward.

Do students take part in competitions?

Yes. Students can join national Abacus Mental Math competitions, online events, the Africa Shenmo Cup, and—when ready—international Shenmo Cup pathways. Competitions build confidence, resilience, and motivation.

How do schools partner with Shenmo Rwanda?
